The start of the P.D.O.

The Denomination of Origin “Queso de La Serena”

was created in 1991, coinciding with the holding of the National Trujillo Cheese Fair, which became its launch platform. Its beginnings were marked by the Order of 25 April 1991 of the Department of Agriculture and Commerce of the Regional Government of Extremadura.

The Diario Oficial of Extremadura (DOE) published an order by the Department of Agriculture and Commerce of the Regional Government of Extremadura on 29 April 1992 in which the regulation of the Denomination of Origin “Queso de La Serena” and its regulatory board were approved, subsequently ratified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA).

This Denomination of Origin, which has held the title “protected” since 21 June 1996, is the oldest in the autonomous community of Extremadura, where there are only two other stamps protected by a back label of quality in the cheese sector.

Currently this Protected Denomination of Origin covers 18 cheese production plants that manufacture the famed Quesos de La Serena.
